Roatan is the largest of the six Bay Islands and is located in the Caribbean Sea approximately 30 miles off the North Coast of Honduras. A variety of airlines offer direct flights from the USA to Roatan. Flight time to Roatan is only 2 hrs.

The diving on Roatan, is incredible! People come from all over the world, not only for the reasonable diving and dive training prices, but because of the wide array of sea life.

Spanish is the official language of Honduras. English and Spanish is spoken in the Bay Islands.

Throughout Honduras and the Bay islands, 110 volts, 60 MHz, is used. This is identical to the US with the same plugs.

Most banks are open from Mon-Fri 9 am to 3 pm (some banks open until 6 pm) If possible try to avoid visiting banks the day before or after a public holiday or on paydays of the 15th and at the end of the month as the banks can be extremely busy and you may need to wait up to an hour for service.

On Roatan west there is a public hospital in Coxen Hole and private clinics of: Wood’s Clinic in Coxen Hole, Cornerstone Medical Clinic at Anthony’s Key Resort, Clinica Esperanza in Sandy Bay, an extension from La Ceiba of Clinica Medicentro in MegaPlaza Mall, French Harbour. Small clinics of Galindo Clinic at Oakridge, and Pandytown Clinic on the East side of the island.

Tap water is not recommended to drink in Roatan. All good restaurants and hotels will provide purified water or use purified water in food preparation. Purified water can be bought easily throughout Roatan.

Malaria and Dengue does occur on Roatan, primarily in more densely populated areas. Wearing insect repellant and clothing such as sleeved shirts and pants are a good idea during dawn and dusk hours and in mosquito prone areas even if you are taking preventive medication. Malaria in Roatan is generally of the milder variety.

No vaccinations are required to enter Roatan. However, it is always good plan to have your Tetanus, Hepatitis A & B up to date

The official currency is the Lempira. The rate versus the US dollar has been stable since 2005 at 18.90Lp to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted, the Euro has limited acceptance. Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants, hotels and stores. Cash advances, in Lempira, can be taken on Visa cards at many banks. Also the ATM machines can be used check your card for international fees applied. Travelers Checks are not recommended as the banks place a 30 day hold until cleared, thus merchants are reluctant to take them.

Roatan offers a wide range of accommodations from first class modern resorts and condo’s to budget hotels. Rentals of private homes and apartments make up the majority of accommodations.
